The dreaded CP4 failure can pack a punch, draining you wallet of up to $10,000 or more. The high cost is a result of metal shavings being released into the fuel system, wreaking havoc and potentially ending in catastrophic failure.
As the CP4 fuel pump wears down, it emits metal shavings and contaminants that infiltrate various fuel system components, including the fuel rails, high-pressure lines, injectors, overflow valve, and return lines. Merely flushing the fuel system is insufficient, as some harmful particles may persist. To completely address the problem, all affected components in the fuel system must be replaced.
The CP4 pump's failure can be attributed to several factors. A significant cause is its vulnerability to internal wear and damage when operating with low-lubricity fuels.
Additionally, air bubble formation within the pump's housing can occur if it struggles to maintain adequate fuel supply. The presence of air leads to direct metal-to-metal contact or allows a lifter to rotate. Without a mechanical lock or keyway to keep it properly aligned, the lifter can turn 90 degrees. If this happens, the lifter starts cutting into the main shaft instead of gliding smoothly.
These issues collectively accelerate wear and introduce metal particles into the fuel system.
Furthermore, since the CP4 pump depends on diesel fuel for both lubrication and cooling, it is especially susceptible to damage from fuel contaminants.
